College of Humanities Advisory Board Inaugurated

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey has inaugurated an Advisory Board for the College of Humanities. The Board has as Chairman, Nene Abayateye Amegatcher a Legal Practitioner and current President of the Ghana Bar Association.

Prof. Aryeetey, speaking at the inauguration ceremony noted that the implementation of the Collegiate system was borne out a strong desire to remain responsive to a changing and dynamic society.  He indicated that the University could no longer afford to do things in the same way and argued that it was incumbent on the University to be more relevant in the delivery of its educational services of research, teaching and extension.

Tracing the antecedents of the recent changes, the Vice-Chancellor said the establishment of the College of Health Sciences twelve years ago, and the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences four years later marked the beginning of adopting the new governance structure. He said this has culminated in the current process to ensure the University remains relevant to developmental issues and also to provide a unified good governance structure to support the change. He recalled the 2007 Visitation Committee Report from which the University received advice from an eminent group of higher education providers and practitioners, and said that this resulted in the  university initiating the process of going full collegiate.

While thanking members of the Board for accepting to serve the University, Prof. Aryeetey stressed on the role of the College Advisory Board, which he noted is a major goal of the reform with the aim of providing a smoother decision making process.

Nene Abayateye Amegatcher, Chairman of the Advisory Board thanked the University for the opportunity and pledged the commitment of members of the Board to assist the College achieve its mandate.  He expressed the hope that with the different academic disciplines represented in the College and the breadth of subjects available to students in the Schools, Institutes and Centres, he was hopeful the Board will provide the needed advice and support to create the required synergy to engender the interdisciplinary objective envisaged by the creation of the College.  

Other members expressed appreciation for the honour done them by the invitation and pledged their support to contribute to the success of the process.

The membership of the Advisory Board of the College of Humanities is as follows: Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Provost of the College of Humanities; Mr. Richard Kwame Asante, a Chartered Accountant with Kwame Asante and Associates representing the University Council; Professor Kofi Anyidoho, Department of English and former Occupant of the  Kwame Nkrumah Chair in African studies representing the College Academic Board; Ms. Odile Tevie, Director of Nubuke Foundation representing Alumni; Robert Armah Dalmeida, Students Representative and Mr. Henry Ennison, UGBS Accounts Office as Staff representative. The other members are Mrs. Margaret Takyi-Micah, CEO of Nest of Ideas Consulting Limited; Mrs. Marian Rosamond Barnor, a Private Legal Practitioner; Dr. Agnes Akosua Aidoo, an academic; Mr. Frank Adu, Managing Director of CAL Bank; Mr. Matthew Boadu Adjei, founder and CEO of Oasis Capital Ghana Limited and Mr. Ernest D. Akore, Data Bank Financial Services Limited.

The ceremony was attended by the Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Prof. John O. Gyapong (Research, Innovation and Development) and Prof. S. Kwame Offei (Academic and Student Affairs), the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, the College Secretary and Secretary to the College Advisory Board, Mrs. Mavis Otoo-Ayeh, and the Acting College Finance Officer, Mr. Kofi Saah Addison.
