Three University of Ghana undergraduate students have been selected to participate in the 10th Annual Hult Prize Regional Final Competition in Boston, United States of America.  This follows a successful outcome of the University of Ghana Campus Edition competition during which they beat twenty-six teams.  The team comprises Mr. Gilles Ametepe, Mr. Kingsley Adu-Okyere and Mr. Ewura Adams Karim, known as the “Green Growth”.

The theme for this year’s edition is “For Us, By Us” – Solving Youth Unemployment.  It is targeted at creating a business venture which can provide 10,000 young people with jobs over the next decade.

The Regionals offer participants the chance to showcase their social enterprise, with the possibility of advancing to the Global Finals and winning USD1 Million of funding in seed capital.

The students, who are from the Department of Political Science, French, the Business School and School of Performing Arts, have a good chance to advance to the global finals and win USD1 million in funding.

In March 2016, four female students of the University of Ghana, Louisa Ofosuah Obimpeh (MPhil Food Science), Bernadine Holdbrook Ghanson (MA African Studies), Anna Agyirwa Aggrey (BSc Food Processing Engineering) and Paulina Nyamekye (MPhil Economics) won the Dubai regionals of the Hult Prize competition, built around the challenge by President Bill Clinton on “Crowded Urban Spaces”. They advanced to the finals of $1million Hult Prize competition hosted at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in September 2016.

The Hult Prize competition is the World’s largest student movement for social good, started by Ahmed Ashkar and Bertil Hultz in 2009 in partnership with the Hult Prize Business School and the United Nations. It is an annual, year-long competition that welcomes college and university students from all over the World to compete for USD 1 million in seed capital to help the winning team launch a social enterprise. Students are challenged to solve a pressing social issue around topics such as food security, water access, energy, and education.

This year’s Hult Prize challenges participants to design innovative businesses as a way of solving the unemployment situation in the world. It is being held in 25 different cities across the world.

The University community wishes this team all the best. Go make us proud!
